getting virtual rendering to retrieve partial result sets

Is there something that overides the standard virtual rendering functionality and retrieves partial result sets from the server instead of the js array datasource. It seems this would be alot faster when rendering datasets that are large. I know this is server side but maybe it could be independent of datasource
