URL in setControlImage()

Apologies for yet another newbie question. I can see that things like setControlImage("home") work fine, but I need to use my own images, probably from a URL. When I try things like setControlImage("http://www.google.com.au/intl/en_au/images/logo.gif") I get nothing.
