What does "data" refer to?

Hi,

What does data refer to here in the code snippet

this.getTemplate("layout").getContent("data");

i am getting nothing out of this line. so i am getting error in the line

var top, padding = parseInt(data.element().currentStyle.paddingTop);

so the control is going to catch part from here.

Help me in solving this
