simple alternating row color 2.5.x

Hello
I cannot seem to find an example with the current API that will generate alternating background row colors. I have tried to piece together code with Active or, not understood, template or directly calling the grids methods and various errors result. Can anyone provide/point to an example compliant/using the current API?
