z-index always on top

I have a div that is getting eclipsed by the data grid. I have set the z-index of this div to 1001 but it still gets eclipsed. Any suggestions? Thanks,

z-index only works if you set position to relative or absolute, could this be the reason?

The order of the div rendering solves this problem. I loaded my divs after the grid had been loaded. Thanks,
